About ashwagandha

What is ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a shrub in the nightshade family that grows in India, the Middle East and parts of Africa. Its root has been used in Ayurveda for thousands of years. It is also known as Indian ginseng or winter cherry, although it is not related to true ginseng.

What’s the difference between root powder and extract?

Root powder is the whole dried root, milled into a powder. An extract is made by concentrating certain compounds from the root using water or solvents, and is usually sold in capsules at a much smaller dose. Powder is the traditional form and is easy to use in food and drinks.

What does it taste like?

Earthy and slightly bitter. Mixing it with milk, honey, cinnamon, cacao or fruit helps balance the flavour.

Using the powder

How much should I take?

A typical serving is ¼ to ½ teaspoon (about 1–3 g) once a day. Start small and follow the advice of a healthcare professional. Do not exceed the serving shown on the pack.

When is the best time to take it?

Many people take it in the evening in warm milk, which is the traditional way, while others add it to a morning smoothie. Choose a time you can stick to.

Who should not take ashwagandha?

It is not recommended for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or for children. Speak to a doctor first if you have a thyroid, autoimmune or liver condition, are due to have surgery, or take medication, particularly for thyroid, diabetes, blood pressure, sleep or anxiety, or immunosuppressants.
